My most Significant Writing Project was our third project the American Values/Codes Essay. I believe that this is the paper that I revised the most on a global level and probably a little bit less on the local level. Not that I did not address my local concerns, I just feel that I had a few less of those as the semester went on and I got a little bit better at the writing process. For the third paper I wrote two very rough drafts. The first one I focused on how industrialized our society was. I felt that this was basically a repeat of my last two papers. I really struggled with finding a way to get what was in my head out on the paper and then finding the “deeper” meaning of it. For my second rough draft I ended up focusing more on the concept of pain and justifying human and animal pain, as well as accepting the ultimate reality of death. My problem in the beginning was that I was not fully understanding the prompt and I was so stuck on my last essay that I really did not have the head space to come up with new ideas. We were using a reading for this essay that we had used in the beginning of the year. I had thought that this would make it easier because I had read it before. It did not. I ended up having to reread “Consider the Lobster” about six times before I actually had a solid grasp on what I wanted to write about. I know that this is also out of our control but I feel like handing in a paper the same day as getting the next one assigned was hard because I had not had time to clear my head from the last paper, so that I could start with a fresh idea for the second paper. In the beginning I found myself just trying to build off my ideas from the last project and that was not working. In the end I needed to step back from the prompt for a day, sign up for a SASC appointment and start with a blank piece of paper.
